Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dream World

The creatures are coming! This summer, see an outdoor installation at Cantigny Park featuring colorful "alebrije" sculptures from Mexico, some up to 15 feet tall. Inspired by Mexican folklore, the 5-month exhibit opens in June with a festive yard opening celebration planned for Sunday, June 12.

The give-and-take alebrijes—pronounced ah-leh-bree-hehs—refers to imaginary creatures that possess elements from different animals. They originated in the 1930s from the vivid dreams of Mexico Metropolis artist Pedro Linares. The creative tradition of alebrijes gained popular exposure in the United States with "Coco," the 2017 Disney/Pixar pic.

At Cantigny, visitors will detect 48 alebrijes throughout the gardens and grounds. Throughout the exhibit, Cantigny volition host related programs and special events such as garden walks, lectures, museum displays and concerts.
